Apollonius lived in the first century. His birth was supernatural. He also performed miracles and appeared to people after his death. Sounds familiar, right? But the Gospels are based on the accounts of witnesses. Our last canonical Gospel was written sixty to sixty-five years after his death. We know that Jesus died around AD. But most contemporary scholars date Mark roughly around 70 AD. Matthew and Luke date to AD. And John dates to AD.

When Was Acts Written?

The writings of John are often assigned the latest dates of all New Testament literature, with some secular scholars placing them well into the second century A. Of course John the son of Zebedee, the disciple of Jesus, could not have lived long enough to write anything much into the second century, so in this case establishing a date of writing should first involve establishing that John was in fact the author. It would perhaps be best to first establish the case that the same author is responsible for all the books associated with John.

The New Testament books of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and Revelation are sometimes called the Johannine literature and are traditionally assigned to John the son of Zebedee, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. Still, there is reason to believe that the traditional understanding here is correct.

While no arrangement of these books can be made with absolute confidence, the following dates are sufficiently reliable to serve the purpose of the Bible.

The traditional authors of the canonical Gospels—Matthew the tax collector, Mark the attendant of Peter, Luke the attendant of Paul, and John the son of Zebedee—are doubted among the majority of mainstream New Testament scholars. The public is often not familiar, however, with the complex reasons and methodology that scholars use to reach well-supported conclusions about critical issues, such as assessing the authorial traditions for ancient texts.

To provide a good overview of the majority opinion about the Gospels, the Oxford Annotated Bible a compilation of multiple scholars summarizing dominant scholarly trends for the last years states p. Neither the evangelists nor their first readers engaged in historical analysis. Their aim was to confirm Christian faith Lk. As scholarly sources like the Oxford Annotated Bible note, the Gospels are not historical works even if they contain some historical kernels.

I have discussed elsewhere some of the reasons why scholars recognize that the Gospels are not historical in their genre, purpose, or character in my article ” Ancient Historical Writing Compared to the Gospels of the New Testament. Coming from my academic background in Classics, I have the advantage of critically studying not only the Gospels of the New Testament, but also other Greek and Latin works from the same period.
